Don’t be afraid, but asset allocation is perhaps THE most important investment strategy decisions that can be made by a pension plan and its trustees. It is the process of apportioning funds between potential investment types in such a way that it will best suit the system’s needs, and it can be affected by a number of factors, such as the expected level of return for the portfolio and the levels of risk and volatility that a board finds acceptable. Frightening to contemplate?

Simply put, it is an effort to balance risk and reward — and getting that balance just right can be scary!

Diversification also involves the allocation of capital. How is it different from asset allocation? Which comes first? And who makes these decisions? Can you diversify too much? A spooky thought.

Given the ever-increasing screams of public pension critics about the nature of our investments, particularly those involving alternative assets, a revisiting of the basics of asset allocation and diversification seems to be in order.

Therefore, be sure to join Leigh Snell, NCTR’s “Washington Swamp Creature” (Director of Federal Relations), as he discusses these important issues with the experts from Bailie Gifford — on Halloween, no less! Register now for this members-only webinar, as attendance is limited. And please note that the webinar is an hour earlier than usual, so you won’t lose any of your precious trick-or-treating time.
